I get your viewpoint, but I honestly stink youre too set on the "isaac dies" part of the story. If anything, The Ascent is an alternative, more pleasant final moments for Isaac than the unhinged chaos of Delirium. The depths of the basement are Isaac at his lowest point, the ascent is Isaac, rising above, leaving those behind, eventually returning to happier memories, before it all becomes Nothing. The Ascent can be seen not as Isaac turning away, but of his earthly burdens falling away as he dies. The ascent can seemingly represent Isaac turning away from his path of self-destruction, but consider this: The Beast ending is literally about Isaac's ascent to the afterlife. The Chest ending, which literally says "The End" is and has always been the final scene of the story, even if it's not necessarily the final scene you'll see. It's not a traditional story in that these events are showing us directly what happened. When he says the story is not linear, he's referring to the fact the endings are more about providing context of isaacs situation as opposed to a linear sequence of events. (And you as a player want to win the game) I recall he also said at some point the only way Isaac lives is when you game over, representing a break in his fantasy and returning to reality.īut that is only a postponement of the inevitable, as Isaac is terminally self-destructive and is absent of healthy support. It's not "supported" by Ed, he says that's absolutely what happens. I think otherwise my theory makes a lot of sense and can be easily used to analyse all the imagery. Has anybody got feedback on my view? Im still a little unsure about the dad imagery and why the last line implies a harmonious life together of isaac and both parents. Its dad who, at the end, encourages isaac to not let his story end there, because isaac glorifies dad and sees all the good, that made him want to live, in him.

Whith defeating the beast, he ultimately chooses life(in the ending the beast is defeated from a beam out of a crack in the sky, its then that crack, which lets isaac ascend/choose life). In the new ending we see isaac fighting the urge of staying in the chest and dying(hes thinkjng of all the bad and then all the good thing in life and weighing them up). Becasue the dogma is pretty much the root of all the bad for isaac, it turns to a vague idea of a big allmighty beast). When you go "down" the new route tho, isaac goes back up(back out of the chest) and fights the root of his mental state(christian dogma. The deeper you go the closer to death he is(which is also why the delirium fight is pretty much isaacs death). My take on the story is: Isaac dies, when suffocating/hallucinating in his chest. But after considering Ed's statement, about isaac's story not being linear, and thinking about some of the themes of this game, I've come to the conclusion, that isaac very much chooses life, in the end, and ultimately has a somewhat happy ending. This is, of course, supported by numerous statements by Ed himself. Its a common sentiment, that isaac generally dies at the end of the game.
